glxtest is a package that allows one to exercise GLX extension on your card and dump contests of interesting memory maps into files. Also there is a program that will provide pretty output of Radeon command streams - which is nicer than reading them in hex.

You can use any GLX program (or GL one) for tests. I found Linux/SDL examples from NeHe OpenGL tutorials very convenient.
